Which Type Of Dental Implant Do I Need?

Here in Liskeard, our dental practice regularly carries out dental implant treatment. We love how it can transform your smile, not only because it restores aesthetics and function to your teeth, but because it can also help support the facial structures and give you a more youthful appearance.

Many of our patients come to our dental practice with one question – which type of dental implant do I need? In this post, we’ll break down three scenarios which might affect what you’ll be offered.

1. One tooth missing

It’s actually more common than you might think to have a missing tooth. There are lots of reasons behind this – from having an accident, to simple old age – but whatever the situation, dental implants can ‘fill the gap’ and give you a durable tooth that looks and works like your natural ones. Even if you have one missing teeth in several locations, a single dental implant will work perfectly.

2. Several teeth missing

Depending on where they are, you have a few options. For instance, a dental bridge, supported by dental implants at either end, could replace several teeth in a row. Or, you could have an implant-retained denture for a missing set. These can help prevent future bone loss and are a more stable alternative to dentures, which can wobble or fall out.

3. All teeth missing

Using a series of dental implants placed around the mouth, an entire bottom and top set of teeth can be fastened in place. Again, it’s a more stable option for those who would traditionally wear dentures (although it should be noted that it doesn’t always prevent movement altogether).

5 reasons to have dental implants…

If you’re still unsure about having dental implants, it can help to know a few of their benefits. These include:

  • Natural-looking aesthetic, matched to the shape, size and colour of your smile
  • Permanent solution to missing teeth and as easy to care for as natural teeth
  • Oral health benefits, where missing teeth could lead to bone loss
  • Typically straightforward procedure, and minimally invasive
  • Durable and stable for life-long chewing, smiling and eating
